Stretch-Tent Issues Wedding Rain-Plan Checklist Ahead of Southern California’s El Niño Season

Early industry feedback highlights setup timing, extra venue days and cancellation terms as budget questions for couples.

The checklist draws on feedback from two Southern California wedding businesses, with particular attention to costs that can arise before the wedding day.

The timing follows NOAA’s September 17 seasonal outlook, which favors above-normal precipitation across the southern half of California for October–December 2026 as El Niño strengthens. The outlook describes seasonal probabilities; it does not predict rain on a particular wedding date.

One responding wedding planner reported greater use of rain-backup arrangements and higher contingency budgets than at the same planning stage last year. The planner described clients reserving tents, lighting and draping in advance to hold inventory, then deciding whether to retain or cancel items within each vendor’s cancellation terms as the event approaches.

The planner also highlighted an often-overlooked expense: installing a tent before forecast rain affects the site. Allowing additional setup days can increase venue fees, labor and delivery costs beyond the couple’s original budget. These observations point to the importance of agreeing on venue access and installation timing as part of the backup plan.

A responding outdoor venue reported that the share of weddings with a booked or budgeted backup tent was about the same as last year. The venue nevertheless said clients were worried about weather and wanted options because its event space is entirely outdoors.

Together, the responses illustrate two different experiences: more advance contingency planning in one business and continued client concern without an increase in the share of tent bookings or budgets in another.

Stretch-Tent’s checklist asks couples and their planning teams to resolve five questions:

1. What does the backup budget cover? Request an itemized estimate covering the tent, installation, removal, delivery and any lighting, flooring or other equipment needed for the alternate layout.

2. When can the team access the venue? Confirm installation and removal windows, charges for extra days, and who approves a schedule change.

3. What happens if the ground is already wet? Review drainage, access routes and usable event areas with the venue and installer, including whether an indoor or alternate location is needed.

4. What is actually reserved? Establish which items are secured, what payments are required, and the written cancellation deadlines and charges for each vendor.

5. Who makes the final weather decision? Agree on the decision-maker, forecast review dates and how changes will be communicated to vendors and guests.
