Drawing on more than 30 years as a firefighter’s spouse, Paula Doherty-Whitman describes life on the other side of the sirens
VENTURA COUNTY, CA, UNITED STATES, October 13, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Each October, Fire Prevention Month draws attention to the work firefighters do to protect their communities. A memoir by author and public-safety family advocate Paula Doherty-Whitman adds another perspective to that conversation: the experience of the spouses and children who wait at home while a loved one is on duty.
Lights, Sirens & Sacrifice: A Fire Wife’s Story of Love, Loss, and the Hidden Cost of Life Behind the Badge, published by Game Changer Publishing, draws on more than three decades of Doherty-Whitman’s life as the wife of a career firefighter. In a personal and reflective account, she describes missed milestones, interrupted routines, and the uncertainty that accompanies a dangerous profession, along with the pride and camaraderie that come with a life of service.
The memoir also considers how long-term service can shape marriage, parenting, and personal identity. For public-safety spouses and partners, Doherty-Whitman hopes her experience, along with the shared stories of other families, will foster a sense of connection.
” Fire Prevention Month is a reminder of the work firefighters do to keep others safe. Behind that work is a household that adjusts around every shift, every call, and every late arrival home. Those families are part of the story, too,” said Doherty-Whitman.
The month also includes National First Responders Day on October 28, an occasion that recognizes the police, fire, and emergency medical personnel who serve their communities. Doherty-Whitman hopes the book encourages readers to extend that recognition to the families who support them.
“Thanking a first responder is meaningful. Extending that thanks to the spouse and children at home is just as meaningful, and it often goes unspoken,” said Doherty-Whitman.
Doherty-Whitman is an author, speaker, and advocate for public-safety families. Through her writing and speaking, she addresses topics including marriage, sacrifice, resilience, perseverance against all odds, and camaraderie within Public Service Families.
